This is an easy cream cheese frosting recipe with simple ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. This buttercream recipe is perfect for carrot cake, red velvet cake, chocolate cake, lemon cake, and even pumpkin spice donuts! Your guests will be raving over this homemade cream cheese buttercream frosting.
You only need a few ingredients for this classic cream cheese frosting, but the most important ingredient is to use a block of cream cheese and not the spreadable cream cheese.
Cream cheese buttercream have become one of my favorite toppings this holiday season. It is one of the most common frostings used with carrot cake, red velvet cupcakes, pumpkin desserts, and so much more!
This amazing cream cheese buttercream recipe is a smooth frosting, rich, and better than vanilla buttercream.
It is not a runny frosting. It is a softer frosting, and can be easily piped using a piping bag.
It is a great alternative to traditional buttercream!
How to prevent runny cream cheese frosting
Make sure you are using full fat block 8 ounces cream cheese. Using low fat cream cheese or spreadable cream cheese can cause your frosting to be runny and loose. For thick and rich cream cheese frosting use an 8 ounce block of full fat cream cheese.
Can cream cheese frosting be piped?
Yes! This cream cheese buttercream can be piped using a piping bag and icing large tip.
What ingredients do I use to make cream cheese buttercream?
The butter and cream cheese in this recipe need to be brought to room temperature before using. This is very important to get a creamy consistence in the buttercream.
Unsalted Butter: You will need to bring 1 cup of unsalted butter to room temperature before making this homemade frosting recipe.
8 ounces cream cheese: Be sure to use full fat block cream cheese. Do not use spreadable cream cheese or low fat cream cheese. It will make your homemade buttercream runny.
Vanilla Extract: I suggest using pure vanilla extract; however, if you do not have pure vanilla extract, imitation vanilla works great too.
Confectioners’ Sugar: This is also known as powdered sugar. Sift the powdered sugar before adding it to the recipe. This will help elevate any lumps in the buttercream.
How to make cream cheese buttercream
In a large bowl (or the bowl of a stand mixer) use a hand mixer or a stand mixer beat the room temperature butter and the softened cream cheese until smooth and lump free. Scrape down the sides of the bowls.
Add the vanilla extract and stir until combined.
With the mixer on low speed, slowly add the powdered sugar into the butter and cream cheese mixture. Mix until ingredients are completely combined and buttercream is smooth.
Now fill a piping bag and decorate those cupcakes or spread over the top of that carrot cake!
Baking tip: If you don’t have piping bags, fill a large freezer bag with the buttercream and snip off the end.
How to store buttercream frosting
Buttercream frosting can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 days. It can also be frozen in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
How to thaw buttercream after it has been frozen
Thaw buttercream in the refrigerator for 24-48 hours. Once thawed, let buttercream come to room temperature before using. You might have to mix it around a bit to soften it back up.
