I made this sourdough French toast recipe for the boys this last weekend and my husband said “mmm yah, that’s perfect.” Mind you he is not a French toast guy. But this French toast recipe is crunchy on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside. I believe I have found the perfect way to make sourdough French toast and I will definitely be making more!
This recipe is great for a quick weekend breakfasts for the family, an easy breakfast for the holiday mornings, and is a great addition to brunch recipes for the brunch with the girls!
This recipe calls for sourdough bread; however, you can use any thick sliced bread you wish. I list a few down below! Enjoy!

Yes! Sourdough bread is a healthy bread. Sourdough bread has higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants than other breads. it also allows your body to absorb the nutrients it contains more easily than those in regular bread.

- Large baking sheet
- Large mixing bowl or baking dish
- Whisk
- Griddle or large skillet
What ingredients do I need for Sourdough French Toast?
This French toast recipe uses simple ingredients to make a delicious French toast ready for any holiday breakfast, weekend breakfast, or brunch!
Here is a list of what you need:
- large eggs
- milk of choice- I am using whole milk, but you can use oat milk, skim milk, almond milk, or even heavy cream
- sugar
- vanilla extract
- ground cinnamon
- salt
- thick slices of sourdough bread- I am using store-bought sourdough sandwich bread, but you may also use homemade sourdough bread
- butter (for pan)
What type of bread is best for french toast?
For best results choose thick sliced sourdough bread. If you can’t find thick slices of fresh sourdough bread. Stale sourdough bread is a great option (you just will not bake it in the oven first).
Also try: brioche bread, white bread, whole wheat bread or any bread of choice.
Why is my french toast soggy?
French toast gets soggy when it is soaked too long in the egg mixture. Be sure to use a sturdy bread (see above for different options), so the French toast soaks in the wet ingredients, but does not get soggy.
Can I make this recipe the night before?
Yes, you can definitely make this the night before. Soak the bread in a baking dish in half of the egg mixture. Cover and let soak in the fridge overnight. In the morning, warm the griddle or skillet and cook! If you need to add more in the morning before cooking, you can.
How to make Sourdough French Toast.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake bread in oven for 15 minutes. Flip halfway.
- Whisk together eggs, milk, salt, sugar, vanilla extract, salt and cinnamon in baking dish or bowl until you get a custardy egg mixture.
- Coat each side of the sourdough bread slices with egg/milk mixture. Make sure each slice of sourdough bread is well coated.
- Place soaked bread slices on a baking sheet.
- Meanwhile, warm a large skillet or griddle on medium heat.
- Add butter and let it melt
- Place sourdough bread slices in single layer in pan and cook until golden brown on each side (approximately 2-3 minutes).
- Serve with maple syrup and your choice of toppings!

Can I freeze sourdough french toast?
Yes! Freeze leftover French toast in wax paper in a ziplock freezer bag or an air-tight container for up to 1 month.
How long does sourdough french toast keep?
Sourdough French toast will keep fresh for only about an hour, but you can freeze it for up to one month.
How do I keep Sourdough French Toast warm before I am ready to eat?
Warm the oven to 170 degrees F and place cooked french toast slices on a baking sheet. After making the french toast, place on the baking sheet and leave in the oven until you are ready to eat. You can also place the cooked French toast on a plate and cover with a clean kitchen towel or aluminum foil.
